Player seeking game
I'm looking for a game to join. I've been playing RPGs for 30 years, and GMed on and off for most of that time. I'm already running one game, though, so I'm looking for an opportunity to gets my kicks as a player. Sundays are best for me, but I can also do weeknights (Tuesday, Thursday, or Friday, currently). I live in Dorchester near Mattapan, but I'm able and willing to travel as far as Somerville, Dedham, or Braintree. The RPGs I know best are D&D, GURPS, BESM, and Cinematic Unisystem, but I'm willing to give many other systems a try, too. I usually prefer fantasy, and have played quite a bit of horror (though I'm a little burnt out on it at the moment). I'll play occasional SF games if they grab me enough, but I'm not really into supers or cyberpunk. If your group has an opening, please let me know! --Tim | | Friday, December 2nd, 2011 | 4:00 pm [doctoraicha]

PAX East
Hi guys. I just bought a ticket to PAX east, and I am trying to find any communities where that is discussed. Do any of you know of any? It's my first gamer con, and first anything that isn't DragonCon, to be honest. Thanks in advance. | | Saturday, November 26th, 2011 | 5:30 pm [peechiz]

Nerd seeks nerds for nerding
Hello! I'm newish to Boston, and I was wondering where Boston's gamers hung out when PAX East wasn't going on. Some googling sent me here. I'd love to meet some new people outside of grad school and get my gaming fix with some new friends. If you know of any semi-regular game nights, I'd love to hear about them. I'm open to any kind of games, but I definitely lean toward the board and card variety. I have very little experience in a legitimate RPG (my friend runs his own homebrew RPG... ask me about Kabob) but I'm totally willing to learn in return for some semi-regular socializing. Nice to meet you, and if you'd like to e-mail me directly, the address is cimpicci AT gmail Toodles! | | Saturday, November 12th, 2011 | 11:20 am [crazycongirl]

GenCon swag for trade
I attended my first GenCon earlier this month, and unsurprisingly, came home with a lot of swag. Some of it's stuff that I'm never going to have a use for, but one of you other gamers out there might: - Tinker, Spacer, Psion, Spy: The Twilight Sector Companion, for Traveller (Terra/Sol Games)
- Claws of Pelazin, a 1st-3rd level Pathfinder adventure (Silver Crescent Publishing)
- Rift, a fantasy adventure PC game (Trion)
- Two demo decks for Magic: The Gathering (one blue, one white)
- True Dungeon tokens (13)
I'm hoping to trade these items for other gaming material, such as RPG books (I mostly play D&D 3.5 and BESM, but I'm interested in several other systems), D&D minis, Cthulhu Mythos toys or games, or LEGO minifigures (yes, I consider those "gaming material"!). If interested, reply or message me with an offer. | | Friday, July 15th, 2011 | 9:19 am [balsamicdragon]

NPCs and PCs needed for Isles : Purgatory Sation June 24-26th
You are invited to join the opening season of the Second Campaign in the setting of THE ISLES. A month has passed since the first wave of new citizens arrived from the Empire of Hardestaan in the frontier-town of Purgatory Station. An uneasy balance and truce has been struck between the new townsfolk, the native inhabitants, and the alien Galeesh. Now the festival of Vestalia looms. This is a chance for the townspeople to improve their standing in the eyes of the local community, but what deeper meaning lurks beneath the seemingly innocent festival rites? How are the spirits of the Court of the Sun involved? Will the festival bring them closer to the locals, or drive a spike through their attempts at diplomacy? Join us in The Isles: Purgatory Station. We are seeking PCs and NPC’s June 24th-June 26th at Ye Olde Commons in Charlton, Mass. ( Read more... ) | | Tuesday, April 5th, 2011 | 10:34 am [thastygliax]

In search of a new game
I have a weekly Saturday role-playing group, but my Sunday group is between games and hasn't met since December. I'd like to do more gaming on a regular basis, so I'm looking for a new campaign to join, preferably every other week or so. Sundays are by far the best day for me, but I may be able to do other times on an occasional basis. I live in Dorchester, between Codman Square and Mattapan Square, but I'm able and willing to travel as far as Somerville or Braintree. I prefer fantasy and horror most, and I'll play occasional SF games if they grab me enough (Serenity, for example), but I hardly ever play supers or cyberpunk (and I'm already in one supers game). I own and would like to try (or play more of) D&D 4E, A Song of Ice and Fire, True20, GURPS 4E, Ghosts of Albion, and Call of Cthulhu, but I'm willing to give plenty of other systems a try, too. In case you're curious, here are links to lists of games I've played and games I own. If your group has an opening, please let me know! --Tim | | Friday, March 4th, 2011 | 8:33 am [xixecal] |
Any P&P RPGs starting up or looking for new members?
Do any of you fine folks know of a P&P RPG in the area that is looking for new players? Pandemonium Books doesn't seem to have a lot going on right now. I've got quite a lot of D&D experience, plus some with White Wolf and various homebrew systems. Anybody recruiting? Current Mood: curious | | Wednesday, February 16th, 2011 | 3:00 pm [smoagendash]

Selling my collection for charity.
Hey gang, I am clearing out my closet and selling off a lot of my gaming and book collection with the majority of the money going to charity. The charities I am supporting are the American Cancer Society, Canine Assistance (a group that trains dogs for disabled people) and a local animal shelter which rescues animals from other shelters before they are put down. Please check out my auctions and bid if you see something you like. They are all starting at a penny and I have some rare out of print items up for auction. ************************************* CALL FOR PLAYERS FOR "THE PLAGUE OF MANKIND: A TECHNOCRACY GAME" ************************************* "The plague of mankind is the fear and rejection of diversity. The belief that there is only one right way to live, only one right way to regulate religious, political, sexual, medical affairs is the root cause of the greatest threat to man: members of his own species, bent on ensuring his salvation, security, and sanity." ~Thomas Szasz This is an open call for the kick-start of a White Wolf: Technocracy game (based around 2nd ed Mage rules, maybe some 3rd ed stuff in there as well but mostly "old school"). MEETING SCHEDULE: * Biweekly, in the evening. Right now I could do Tuesdays or Thursdays. LOCATION: Somerville IDEAL GROUP SIZE: 5 CONCEPT: A rookie amalgam of agents assigned to investigate weird happenings, reality deviants, etc. Relatively low-level characters (at first), facing "the darkness" together, growing from the experience. Emphasis will be on character development and story. Yes, there will be plenty of combat, but combat will *serve* the story, not *be* the story. It's more "X-files" or "The Dollhouse" than "Men in Black." SETTING: Present day United States. Your amalgam is based in a major city but will travel all around the country and internationally as well. At this point your character has already joined the Technocracy, and possesses a low-level understanding of the Technocratic Union -- they're some sort of secret organization, connected to law enforcement, with access to Stuff That The Masses Don't Know About -- but that's it. Be advised that I will not be keeping strictly to the White Wolf canonical universe. So just because you THINK you know what the Akashic Brotherhood is like, for example, you just might be surprised. :) MOOD: Dark and conspiracy-ish, as you might expect, plenty of paranoia, but also an element of idealism Again, think Mulder and Scully - folks basically out to "serve and protect," even though alliances are tangled and morality gets a little gray. Hoping for some good, in-character interactionsI'll bring the twisty plots, you bring the Really Good Roleplaying (tm). I have the basic architecture of a story arc, which I will of course modify as needed to fit the individual histories, goals and actions of your characters. Which brings us to... CHARACTERS: 1. By the time the game begins, your characters should know that there is "more out there in heaven and Earth" than the mundane world wants you to know. What was the Big Event that made your character realize this - that Awakened (er,Enlightened) him or her? 2. Your character should have beliefs. What I mean by this is, when you design your character, you should specifically map out where they stand on issues like: >* Individuals' rights to privacy vs. the masses' right to public safety >* Level of trust in law enforcement >* When it is and isn't okay to take a life (especially an "innocent" life) >* What kinds of crimes (or criminals) deserve >clemency, and what kinds deserve no mercy at all >* Any other particular beliefs or positions 3. Sketch out what events in this character's life might have led him/her to hold these beliefs. 4. There is of course a balance heretry not to make a total nutcase ideologue - they don't tend to be team players, and these characters DO have to work as a team. Holding beliefs doesn't mean prosthelytizing, or smacking everyone over the head who disagrees with you. If your character has a tendency to be combatative, create some reason why he/she keeps it in check most of the time. The arguments should come out at key dramatic moments, as opposed to over who gets to drive the car. :) 5. Your character has joined the Technocracy for some reason. What is that reason? Were they enticed? Forcibly recruited (if so, why do they stay? True prisoners make for poor agents, although blackmailed/pressured ones might do fine)? Did they knock on the door and demand to be let in on the conspiracy? 6. As a "character" itself, the Technocracy in this game is neither heroic nor the Evil Empire - it's nuanced, as are its enemies, and your characters, while they need not be starry-eyed optimists (or dogmatic ideologues), should at least think of themselves as "the good guys" in some way shape or form. Of course, let us not forget that some of the worst atrocities in human history were perpetrated by folks who believed they were on the side of the angels 7. Nuts and bolts: * Your character can be from any of the five conventions, although of course we want a balance of character specialities to ensure everyone has That Thing They Do Better Than Everyone Else. * However, keep it human. No T-1000's or far-out Frankenstein steroid men, although some manner of subtle cybernetics or gen-mods are par for the course. * What if you want to play another White Wolf kind of character? Hunters are the most likely folks to be in the amalgam, although low-level stats are a must - Hunters can get very twinkish very quickly. Non-technocracy-mages are a possibility with a really good explanation. Werebeasts are straight out. Vampiresonly REALLY high-gen ones (i.e., young, low-level), with a damned good reason why they're working with the Technocracy (I'm thinking a Spike-style "chip in the brain"). Wraiths? Perhaps. Again the damned good reason rule applies. 8. Remember the cardinal rule, though - inexperienced, pretty weak characters, who have to rely on brains and creativity as much as firepower. ABOUT THE GM I've been a GM for about 20 years now; I've been an occasional freelance writer for White Wolf and a few other things. I try and run games where story and character predominate; I am not above fudging the rules here and there for story's sake. However, I have little patience for outright munchkinism, simply because it renders stories ridiculous. :) WHEN DO WE START? Soon. Maybe even next week? INTERESTED? If so, please email me with your ideas for a character you'd like to play (don't worry, I won't hold you to it, I'm just trying to get a sense) Thanks for your time. Have a great day! - David "Liberty means responsibility. That is why most men dread it." - George Bernard Shaw |
